Europe on my mind....

I get these e-newsletters from National Geographic usually pertaining to world travel. Today's caught my eye rather quickly... a Shakespeare bookstore in Paris. I rattled a few brain cells staring at the picture until I realized...woohooo..I've been there...

Here's the link to the article.

Here's a link to my Europe blog with LOTS of photos. It's been sitting there ignored for quite some time now.

Europe blog...very cool. My parents went backpacking through Italy for 6 weeks a few years back and have been wanting to go again. I have a dream that someday I too will go for weeks and weeks. sigh.

Glad to see that you are still fighting this flu and have not been taken prisoner...keep it going :-)

sigh is right... my 4 weeks in Europe was not only a major turning point in my life, but it was also the best trip i have ever taken! I learned so much about myself and i'm not scared anymore to get on a plane by myself, travel across the atlantic, hop in a taxi at the airport, and wander around London or Paris or Rome until i find a hotel! It was so worth every single (practically gold dipped) penny i spent!

Natasha, I am so glad you shared this place...I would love to go to this bookstore! I know what you mean about overseas travels changing your life. I really believe every American needs to do this...not necessarily as a tourist with a packaged-plan, staying in the expensive places, eating Americanized version of the food, etc., getting a "sheltered" view...I think you have to go with the locals as much as possible, and get to see it from their perspective. And you need to be pre-educated, so you really know what you're seeing, know the history, significance, to make the experience richer, deeper.

The kids I know, birth to college-age, that have traveled and experienced real local life, maybe seen some of the more unpleasant, impoverished, seedier side, as well as the historic landmarks and cultural gems, have a better sense of world view, and better balance, less self-oriented, than those who've only been here. And there's absolutely something to be said for scrimping and saving and earning your own way...you appreciate it so much more, and the overall value is greater.

I'm ready to see more!

So, what's next for you on the travel horizon?

JM - ITS SO TRUE! All of it! When i was in Paris, I was fortunate enough to stay with my girlfriend who lives there (she's french). So i saw a lot of the less-touristy things when she came with me in to the city. She and her friend (in the picture) took me to an awesome restaurant in an area where local artists tend to hang out. It was totally the "french" we associate with in the movies. So cool.

Whats next? Well Rob and I are going to Vermont for our honeymoon but we've both been there before. We were talking about hitting the midwest somewhere. I'm open to suggestions. Ive seen the west coast, but i've never stopped inbetween before.
